RANI CHANNAMMA STUDY CHAIR

About:
Celebrated historical pride of Karnataka, Rani Channamma (October 23, 1778-February 21, 1829) was the Queen of Kittur, a principality in Karnataka, Southern India. At an early stage she received martial training particularly in sword fighting, archery and horse riding. She was married to Raja Mallasarja of the Desai family and became the Queen of her native kingdom and had a son. After her son’s death in 1824 she adopted Shivalingappa, the new heir to the throne. The British East India Company did not legitimize this and ordered Shivalingappa’s expulsion using the police force of the paramountcy on the pretext of the new policy of “Doctrine of Lapse” introduced by Lord Dalhousie, which Rani Channamma defied. Her longdrawn political and military resistance has immortalized her name in the annals of Karnataka’s history. This legacy is the foundational motive behind our esteemed University.
