The Department of Studies in English was established in the year 2011-12, when Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, accorded an independent status. Presently with six faculty members, the deaprtment is full- fledged with two Professors, one Associate Professor and three assistant professors serving at the main campus and P.G.Centre, Vijayapur. With a student strength of hundred and above, the department is vibrant with teaching- learning, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities conducted throughout the year. The department functions with a holistic purpose to provide a congenial atmosphere for the overall development of the personalities of the students and hone their skills and maximize their potentials to compete in today’s global world.
To emerge as a model academic centre for the study and research in language, literature and culture by developing the best teaching practices and introducing the latest thrusts and trends in English studies.
Committed to the ideals of transformative learning paradigm, the department hopes to expand the parameters of English studies by fostering a meaningful dialogue between various disciplines and through exploring the terrain of literary studies.

Eligibility
Candidates who possess BA degree with Optional English as one of the subjects, having minimum of 45% of marks as an aggregate from any recognized university are eligible to apply. However, relaxation of 5% of marks in respect of SC/ST/Cat-I will be allowed as per the prevailing rules of the University and Government Orders, issued from time to time.

Prof. Vijay F. Nagannawar, Professor began his teaching career in the year 1993 and has twenty six years of experience. Along with teaching and research, he has experience in administration where he has worked in different capacities. He is the Chairman of the Department since 2013. He was Dean, School of Languages and Academic Council Member. He is on the panel of many Universities in different capacities. He has presented papers as resource person in many National and International Seminars and conferences other than having published papers in many journals of repute. He is also on Editorial board of four Journals. Presently he is guiding eight research scholars in the department and was co-guide for one M Phil student from Oxford University. Other than these, he is Chairman, Doctoral Committee, Board of Examiners, Department Council, Under Graduate programmes. His area of specialization is Dalit Literature. He is founder Director for Open and Distance Learning.
Dr. Nagaratna Parande: With Masters degrees both in English and Kannada, she obtained her M.Phil. and Ph.D. in English literature from Karnatak University,Dharwad . She also has, to her credit, a PGDTE from the English Foreign Language University, Hyderabad. She has 23 years of teaching experience. Appointed through the Karnataka Public Service Commission in 2006, she has served in many Government First Grade colleges. She joined Rani Channamma University in 2012. She has also served as Vice Principal and Coordinator of P.G. Departments at Sangolli Rayanna First Grade Constituent College, Belagavi. At present, she is working as a professor and Chairperson at Rani Channamma University, Belagavi. She is currently guiding six research scholars. She has been a RAC, BOS, and BOE member at many universities. She has authored five books titled Modern English Grammar and Usage, A Rainbow Bridge, Globalisation and Literature, Gendering Diaspora, Revisiting Anita Desai’s Clear Light of Day, and co-edited Venugopal Abhinandan. She has published more than 50 research papers in peer- reviewed national and international journals. Her areas of interest include Comparative Literature and Diaspora Literature. Dr. Kavita S. Kusugal, Assistant Professor - is a MA in English from Karnatak University. She has additional MA degree that is in Kannada from the same University. Her Ph.D. degree is titled ‘Idioms in R. K. Narayan’s Novels: A Linguistic Analysis’ from Karnatak University. Presently she is guiding 8 research scholars in the department of Studies in English of Rani Channamma University. She is interested in comparative literature. She has the experience of working as a member of Karnatak Sahitya Akademi. Organised several workshops and seminars. She has total 19 years of teaching experience. She has given several radio talks and interviews. Her creative writings are titled ‘Beladingaladavalu’, ‘Kattaleya Garbhadali’ and ‘Belakina Bittane’. Ms. Pooja P. Halyal, Assistant Professor- Born and brought up in the rich cultural ambience of Dharwad, Ms. Pooja P. Halyal procured her BA and MA degrees from the prestigious Karnatak College and Karnatak University with three gold medals. She has cleared NET and SLET and started her teaching career in 2000. She has twelve years of teaching experience at UG and seven years at PG level. Currently serving as Assistant Professor of English at Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, she is specialized in Gender Studies. She has published more than 30 research papers in reputed journals, presented research papers at more than 40 State, National and International Conferences and Seminars, attended more than 40 workshops, seminars and other academic training programmes and delivered more than 20 invited lectures on varied topics and chaired sessions in many academic gatherings. Currently she is pursuing her doctoral degree in the area of feminist studies. Additionally she has the rare distinction of being Governor nominated Student Senate member at KUD in 1999 and worked in several committees during its golden jubilee celebrations. Dr. Madhushri Kallimani, Assistant Professor- is working in the Department of English since ten years. She has pursued research on the topic ‘Fantasy and Children’s Fiction in Modern India: A Study of Ravindranath Tagore and Ruskin Bond’. She is a recognized Guide of the University. She has presented many research papers at the National and International level and has published several research articles in academic journals. She has accomplished the experience of working as a Coordinator for NAAC, SC/ST cell, Member & Secretary of Women Empowerment Cell and Anti Sexual Harassment Cell and as a member of Teachers’ Association at her work institute since the beginning of her service. She is also an active member of BoE and BoS. She is the member of professional associations like Comparative literature Association of India and IACLALS. She was the Coordinator for cultural activities and Alumni & Parent Teacher Association of the department and has awards to her credit. She has worked as the Local Head of the PG Department of English at Sangolli Rayanna College, RCU, Belagavi. She is a feminist and has written few poems on feministic themes. Dr. Fayyaz Ilakal, Assistant Professor.- has received his M A from Karnataka University in the year 2003 and letter went on to earn Ph. D from the same university entitled “Family Life in Arthur Miller’s Select Plays” in the year 2011. He cleared state lectureship eligibility test (KSET) in 2019. He was appointed as Assistant Professor in Rani Channamma University on 29-11-2012. He is BOE and BOS member of various universities. He has attended various National and International Conferences as Key-Note Speaker, Chaired Sessions, presented and published research papers. His area of specialization is Disability Studies, Film Studies and Indian English Literature and Translations. RESEARCH ACITIVITIES:
The Department of Studies in English is known for its research activities by introducing papers on research, research projects for students, conducting several workshops on research methodologies and encouraging the researchers to explore the plethora of research. The department encourages research on Indian English Literature, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Dalit Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Comparative Literature etc. Presently there are thirty-one students pursuing research under seven recognized guides. The Department has one PhD awardee, awarded in the year 2018.
