ABOUT: The Department of Studies and Research in Physics under the School of Basic Sciences was established in the academic year 2011 offers Master of Science (M.Sc.,) and Ph.D., programme in Physics. Department was started with an intension to strengthen the science education in the northern part of Karnataka. The present intake for M.Sc., course is 45 and the admission is based on the merit cum roster system as per Govt. of Karnataka. The department follows CBCS Scheme syllabus. The Department of Physics is equipped with modern laboratory equipment’s and currently offering Condensed Matter Physics as a specialization. In future the department is intended to start other specialization subjects such as Nuclear and Particle Physics Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Electronics and related inter disciplinary nature courses. Faculty members of the department generated external research funds to the tune of 1.2 crores and involved in designing and building research instruments. Several students of the department cleared SLET examination and considerable number of students are pursuing research in various Universities. VISION: To make the Department of Physics under the umbrella of Rani Channamma University, the most preferred centre of higher education in the areas of Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics and Electronics. MISSION: • To create an opportunity for meaningful learning in the areas of Physics for the students in the region. • To develop the human capital from this region to contribute to the growth of Science and Technology. • To develop world class teaching and research laboratory facilities for training students for higher education and job opportunity. • To develop a center of research and higher education for social development of the region. • To carry out research in the interdisciplinary areas in collaboration with other departments under the university, other institutions of higher learning & research and industry. BEST PRACTICE: Students are trained hands-on in building low cost instruments and adopting them in research and teaching. High end research instruments are designed and built in-house.

Prof. B. G. Hegde: received his M.Sc., in Physics with Solid State Physics specialization from Karnatak University, Dharwad, India in 1989 and Ph. D. degree in Condense Matter physics from Bangalore University, India in 2002. He worked in the area of radiation damage pathways in solids using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) as a probe for his Ph.D., in collaboration with Prof. S. V. Bhat, IISc Bangalore. From 2002 to 2007 he worked as a post doctoral research associate and from 2007 to 2012 as a research scientist at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, USA. His research work at USC was in the area of structural studies of membrane bound proteins and amyloid fibrils using Pulse EPR and other Biophysical techniques. In 2013 he joined Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, Karnataka, India as an Associate Professor of Physics. He is currently involved in teaching condensed matter Physics to M.Sc. students and guiding Ph.D., students. Research interest: Experimental Condensed Matter Physics: Magnetic ordering in manganite nano particles and thin films, multiferroic materials. Structural studies of membrane bound proteins using EPR, Developing instrumentation to study magnetic properties, Hall effect studies and conductivity measurements. He is the author of more than 30 research articles published in reputed international journals like PNAS, JACS, JBC and Structure etc and handling three major research projects worth Rs. 80 Lakhs. He is the recipient of the best paper award (ARP award) of Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), Government of Karnataka for the year 2016-17.More...
Dr. Bhushan A. Kanagalekar: He did his M. Sc (Physics) from Karnatak University, Dharwad, with specialisation in Nuclear Physics in 2006. He qualified GATE exam and was also awarded the CSIR-NET-JRF in Physical Sciences while he was pursuing M. Sc. He joined IIT Bombay for doing his Ph. D in Experimental Nuclear Physics under guidance of Prof. Pragya Das. He submitted his Ph. D thesis titled “Study of high spin states of I-126 populated using heavy ion fusion reactions”, from the Physics Department at IIT Bombay. During his Ph. D he published his article titled Triaxial nuclear shapes in I-126, in Physical Review C. He has also presented and published an article titled “Fourth and fifth root of a number using Aryabhata’s method”, at the World Sanskrit Conference 2015, held at Bangkok, Thailand. He joined Rani Channamma University, as an Assistant Professor, in August 2013. He is currently involved in teaching core subjects such as Mathematical Physics and Quantum Mechanics to M. Sc students. Research Interests: They include Experimental Nuclear Physics topics such as Nuclear Reactions and Nuclear Structure.
